Tripp Trapp®: The Design Edit with Tali Roth

Stepping into Tali Roth’s family home is like entering another world – a world of rich textures, vibrant patterns, abundant art and ... three kids. Amidst beautiful self-designed furniture, breathtaking jeweled vases, upcycled vintage chairs, bold floor tiling and ornate original chandeliers are the magical sounds of a young family.

Having set up her first family home in New York, and now re-creating a classic art deco home in Melbourne Tali has evolved and adapted her unique style to not only build an artful space, but also a home for her family – husband, Marcus, and children Pheonix (5), Romeo (5) and Ruby (2).

We sat down with her family and our new Tripp Trapp® Chair Terracotta and had a chat to her about how to navigate home design with young kids. Here are her thoughts:

Q: What practices do you have around mealtimes with your family?

Tali: At this stage in life, we eat together(ish). I am usually herding them and feeding them at the same time. The kids love the Tripp Trapp® Chair because it’s way more comfortable to sit in and they feel more included at the dinner table.

Q: How do you describe your design style?

Tali: I describe my style as nostalgic, warm, juxtaposed and cool. I hate the expected and don’t subscribe to rules. I love organised chaos and personality. For me, uniqueness is imperative.

Q: How has your design style changed since becoming a parent?

Tali: My style has changed since having kids only marginally. It’s been more affected by learning about running a household – living with things and seeing what ages well and doesn’t. I didn’t design my home for my kids. I designed a home that feels balanced and inviting, and for a family.

Q: How do you find balance as a parent and business owner?

Tali: What’s that? Ha. I’ll let you know when I figure it out.

Q: How do you encourage and support creativity for your children when it comes to your spaces?

Tali: It’s something I find quite hard. I like to keep the house clean and presentable. I have different creative spaces in the house. Upstairs, I keep dry tools and toys for creativity and activities that are less messy. Then I set up a messy play area downstairs.

Q: How did you approach designing this meal space knowing you had to cater for 3 kids?

Tali: I knew we were always going to be casual, so our dining space is parallel to the kitchen. That is our only sit-down space, but we also find ourselves gathering around the kitchen counter a lot as a family too. I love the colour of the Tripp Trapp® Chair Terracotta. It’s so elevated and gorgeous and fits perfectly to our home.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your favourite pieces?

Tali: My favourites pieces – I am a lighting fiend. I love the lighting in the kitchen, it makes it feel like part of the house and not a cold, disconnected space. I also love to have freshly cut flowers, so my glossy red vase is my absolute favourite.
